Mycotoxins are fungal metabolites that have shown negative impact on animal nutrition and health.
Aquaculture species: fish and shrimp, are also threatened by mycotoxins, causing various symptoms as zootechnical performance reduction, increased mortality, hepatic/hepatopancreas problems.
In salmonids prolonged expression to the feed contaminated by aflatoxins may lead to immunosuppression and liver tumours, and in shrimps affects hepatopancreas. Also deoxinivalenol must be under special control in aquaculture feeding as is considered the mycotoxin responsible mainly for delays in growth and bad conversion ratios.
Conscious about the seriousness of the problem, many feed mills have implemented measures for control and elimination of mycotoxin´s from the diets.
